Visiting the Physical Therapist

Clayton, Granny and I visited the Physical Therapist this morning and received an overwhelming amount of helpful information. Clayton was diagnosed with left-side torticollis (tight neck muscle) and right side plagiociphaly (flat spot). The PT said that he has a mild case, but it has caused some delay in his ability to hold his head up independently. He holds his head at 45 degrees and we want to strengthen his neck so that he is holding it at 90 degrees. We will visit the PT once a week until the end of summer (hopefully), and then we will continue PT homework until he is one year old. It is definitely going to be a family affair because it is very important that we remain diligent and consistent. Therefore, I feel extremely fortunate to have Jeanette's (Chad's mom) help with Clayton when I go back to work. I am secure in knowing that he will receive an abundance of support with his torticollis while in her care. The PT really emphasized tummy time and gave us several stretches to work on that strengthen his neck and shoulders. He definitely dislikes the exercises but we are encouraged to push through even if he is crying (this is very hard for Mommy and Daddy).

The PT was very supportive and said that it was most likely caused by the position he was in when in my womb. She said he probably got stuck in the same position, and I most likely felt him kick in the same spot (which was under my ribs). They are seeing a surge in torticollis due to the "Back to Sleep" campaign launched to combat SIDS. Particularly new parents, like me, take SIDS so seriously that we limit the amount of tummy time. If given adequate tummy time torticollis will resolve itself in Clayton without the need for further intervention. I am attaching a few videos that we took at the PT's office this morning. My parents, Lara, Jenn, and Nita will benefit from seeing the exercises so that we can all work together in helping him build strength. More later...

Interesting! Seems like there's going to be quite a few little changes ... how you hold him, how he sleeps, where he sleeps, etc. Doesn't seem too bad though.

Poor little guy! Sounds like there's relief in knowing why he disliked tummy time so much though, huh? And although it sounds like you guys will have to put in some extra work, at least it seems like a (relatively) easy fix. I'll be praying that his little neck gets stronger and stronger!
